Abia State Governor Alex Otti has appointed former Super Eagles captain Kanu Nwankwo as the new chairman of Enyimba International FC.
The appointment was announced in a statement by the governor’s office on Monday.
Kanu, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, replaces Felix Anyansi Agwu, who stepped down after 24 years as chairman.
In his speech, Governor Otti said that he was confident that Kanu would “raise the bar” at Enyimba.
“Driving Youths and Sports Development to enviable heights is one of the core visions of my administration,” Otti said. “The task is humongous, and the real challenge before you is to raise the bar.”
Otti also thanked the former management of the club for their “outstanding contributions over the years.”
Kanu, who is a native of Abia State, is a legend of Nigerian football. He played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Ajax, Arsenal, and Inter Milan.
He is also a successful businessman and philanthropist.
In a statement, Kanu said that he was “humbled and excited” to be appointed chairman of Enyimba.
“I am committed to working with the management, players, and fans to make Enyimba a great club again,” Kanu said.
“I want to see Enyimba shine on the continental and global stage again.”
Kanu’s appointment is seen as a major coup for Enyimba. He is a highly respected figure in Nigerian football and his presence is expected to boost the club’s image and attract new sponsors.
It is also hoped that Kanu’s experience and expertise will help Enyimba to regain their former glory. The club has not won the CAF Champions League since 2004.
Kanu’s appointment is a sign of the ambition of the Abia State government to revive Enyimba and make it a major force in African football again.
