Chelsea have agreed a deal with Brighton worth a British record £115 million for midfielder Moises Caicedo.
The 21-year-old Ecuadorian international is set to become the most expensive player in British football history, surpassing the £106.8 million that Chelsea paid Benfica for midfielder Enzo Fernandez in January.
Caicedo has been in impressive form for Brighton since joining the club from Independiente del Valle in 2020.
He has made 57 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring four goals and providing three assists. The young midfielder is known for his strong tackling, passing ability, and energy in midfield. He is also a good dribbler and can score goals from distance.
Chelsea have been tracking Caicedo for some time and were initially willing to pay £100 million for him.
However, Brighton rejected that offer and held out for a higher price. Chelsea eventually agreed to pay £115 million, which includes £100 million in an initial fee and £15 million in performance-related add-ons.
The deal is expected to be completed in the coming days. Caicedo will sign a five-year contract with Chelsea and will become the club’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.
Caicedo’s arrival is a major coup for Chelsea. He is a young, talented midfielder with a lot of potential.
He will add much-needed depth to Chelsea’s midfield and could be a key player for the club in the years to come.
The deal also represents a significant statement of intent from Chelsea. The club is clearly determined to challenge for the Premier League title and the Champions League this season.
They have spent big money to bring in three top players in Sterling, Koulibaly, and Caicedo. It will be interesting to see how they perform together.
