The public prosecutor of Grasse, France, has confirmed that an investigation has been opened into AS Monaco striker Wissam Ben Yedder on suspicion of rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault.
The alleged incidents took place in the south of France in June 2022. Ben Yedder was arrested on Tuesday and released on bail on Wednesday. He has denied all allegations against him.
Ben Yedder is a 31-year-old French international who has played for Monaco since 2019. He is considered to be one of the best strikers in Ligue 1.
The investigation into Ben Yedder is ongoing. He is due to appear in court at a later date.
In a statement, Monaco said they were “aware of the investigation” and that they would “fully cooperate with the authorities”.
The statement said: “AS Monaco takes the allegations against Wissam Ben Yedder very seriously. We are aware of the investigation and will fully cooperate with the authorities.
“Wissam Ben Yedder has denied all allegations against him and we will continue to support him until the matter is resolved.”
Ben Yedder is the latest high-profile footballer to be accused of sexual assault. In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile cases involving footballers, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema.
These cases have highlighted the issue of sexual violence in football. It is important that these cases are investigated thoroughly and that victims are supported.
