She was instrumental in the heart of defense for Nigeria in their two games so far at the world cup.

The 23-year-old defender, who was born in England to a Nigerian father and an English mother, made her debut for the Super Falcons in February 2023.

In an interview with BBC Sport Africa, Plumptre said that she decided to switch allegiances because she wanted to represent her Nigerian roots.

“I’ve always felt Nigerian,” she said. “I’ve always been proud of my Nigerian heritage.

“I’ve always wanted to represent Nigeria at international level, so when the opportunity came up, I didn’t hesitate.”

Plumptre said that she was also motivated by the desire to help Nigeria win trophies.

“I want to help Nigeria win trophies,” she said. “I want to be part of a team that makes history.

“I believe that the Super Falcons have the potential to be one of the best teams in the world, and I want to be a part of that.”

Plumptre’s decision to switch allegiances has been welcomed by the Nigerian football authorities.

“We are very happy to have Ashleigh Plumptre in our team,” said former NFF President Amaju Pinnick at the time.

“She is a talented player who will add a lot to the Super Falcons.

“We are confident that she will help us achieve our goals.”

Plumptre is the latest in a growing list of players who have switched allegiances to Nigeria in recent years.

Other notable players who have made the switch include Ifeoma Onumonu, Toni Payne, and Osinachi Ohale.

The influx of foreign-born players has boosted the Super Falcons’ squad and helped them to become one of the most feared teams in Africa.

The team is currently ranked third in Africa and 40th in the world.
