Beyond Limits FA secured their place in the Viareggio Cup final after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over fellow Nigerians, Ojodu City, in the first semifinal on Saturday.
Arierhi Kparobo and Isaac Chukuwudi were the heroes for Beyond Limits, scoring the goals that propelled them past their compatriots. Hafiz Umar Ibrahim, the tournament’s leading scorer with ten goals, pulled one back for Ojodu City in the first half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the determined Beyond Limits side.
Chukwudi‘s second-half header, following a well-placed cross, proved to be the difference maker, sending Beyond Limits into the final.
Coach Ajibolade expressed his pride in his team’s performance and acknowledged the efforts of both sides. “I’m proud of the team, of our effort so far in the tournament,” he said. “I’m also grateful for the effort that the boys put in and for the general organization of the tournament.”
He also commended Ojodu City for their impressive run in the competition. “I think Ojodu City were worthy competitors,” Ajibolade said. “I think we had to dig in very deep to get this result. They should be proud of themselves. It’s their first time coming to Europe, their first time in the Viareggio Cup, and their first time in the semis. It’s a journey that they should be proud of.”
Beyond Limits will now face Centre Nationale Brazzaville from the Republic of Congo in the final on Monday. CNB secured their place in the final with a narrow 1-0 victory over another Nigerian team, Mavlon FC. The Congolese side will be looking to rely on the goal-scoring prowess of Declan Rayan Moussavou, who has netted five times in the tournament so far.
The stage is set for an exciting all-African final at the Viareggio Cup, showcasing the talent and potential of young footballers from the continent.
