The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has terminated its $415 million broadcast deal with BeIN Sports with immediate effect. The decision was made by CAF’s Executive Committee.
In a statement, CAF said the decision was made “due to a number of contractual breaches by BeIN Sports.” The statement did not specify the nature of the breaches.
BeIN Sports has responded to the termination, saying it “does not accept this termination and will take all necessary legal steps to challenge and overturn it.”
The termination of the broadcast deal is a major blow to BeIN Sports, which had been the exclusive broadcaster of CAF competitions since 2016. The deal was worth $415 million over four years.
CAF’s next meeting is scheduled for today, September 6, 2023. The meeting will be chaired by CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
It is unclear what will happen at the meeting, but it is likely that CAF will discuss the termination of the broadcast deal with BeIN Sports.
The termination of the broadcast deal is a major development in African football. It remains to be seen how CAF will move forward and how it will secure a new broadcast partner.
