The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that it will be investigating Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Fédération Camerounaise de Football (FECAFOOT), over allegations of improper conduct.
CAF said in a statement that it had received written statements from several Cameroonian football stakeholders alleging that Eto’o had engaged in “certain improper conduct” during his time in office. The allegations include misuse of funds, nepotism, and abuse of power.
Eto’o has denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and “politically motivated.” He said he is “confident” that he will be cleared of any wrongdoing.
CAF said it will be conducting a “thorough investigation” into the allegations and that it will “take appropriate action” once the investigation is complete.
The investigation comes at a time when Eto’o is already facing pressure from Cameroonian football stakeholders. In recent months, there have been calls for his resignation over his handling of the national team.
Eto’o was elected president of FECAFOOT in 2021. He is a former Cameroonian international footballer who is considered one of the greatest African players of all time.
The investigation into Eto’o is the latest in a series of scandals to hit African football. In recent years, there have been allegations of corruption and mismanagement at FIFA, CAF, and several national federations.
