It is the most prestigious club competition in the region and features teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The competition was first established in 1962, but it was not until the 2008-09 season that it was rebranded as the CONCACAF Champions League. Since then, the competition has grown in popularity and has become a major event in the football calendar.

The format of the Concacaf champions league has undergone several changes over the years. In the current format, 16 teams participate in a knockout competition that starts with a preliminary round. The winners of the preliminary round join 15 other teams in the main tournament, which is played in a knockout format, with each tie being played over two legs.

The winner of the Concacaf champions league qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup, which is a global club competition featuring the champions of each continent. The Concacaf champions league winner also qualifies for the Campeones Cup, which is a one-off match between the champions of the CCL and the winners of the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

The CCL has produced some memorable moments over the years. One of the most memorable was in the 2011-12 season when Mexican club Santos Laguna beat MLS side Toronto FC 7-3 on aggregate in the quarterfinals. Santos Laguna went on to reach the final, but they were beaten by fellow Mexican club Monterrey.

Mexican teams have been the most successful in the competition, winning the tournament on 15 occasions. Costa Rican teams have also enjoyed success in the competition, winning it three times. MLS teams have struggled to make an impact in the competition, with only one team, the Montreal Impact, reaching the final in 2014-15, where they lost to Club América of Mexico.

One of the reasons why Mexican teams have been so successful in the competition is the quality of their domestic league, the Liga MX. The Liga MX is one of the strongest leagues in the region and is able to attract some of the best players from around the world. Mexican teams have also invested heavily in their squads and have been able to attract top talent from other countries in the region.

Another factor that has contributed to the success of Mexican teams in the Concacaf champions league is their experience in playing in the competition. Mexican teams have been participating in the competition since its inception, and they have developed a wealth of knowledge and experience in how to navigate the different stages of the tournament.

In recent years, there has been a trend towards greater parity in the competition, with teams from outside Mexico and Costa Rica becoming more competitive. In the 2018-19 season, the final was contested between Mexican side Tigres UANL and Monterrey, but it was a tightly contested affair that went all the way to penalties, with Monterrey ultimately emerging victorious.

The 2019-20 season was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the competition had to be suspended for several months. When it resumed, the remaining matches were played in a condensed format in a single location, with Mexican side Tigres UANL eventually emerging as the winners.

The 2020-21 season was also affected by the pandemic, with the competition being played entirely in the United States due to travel restrictions. In a break from tradition, the competition featured a single-elimination format, with the final being contested between Mexican side Cruz Azul and Liga Deportiva Alajuelense of Costa Rica. Cruz Azul emerged victorious, winning the competition for the first time in their history.

Looking ahead, the future of the Concacaf champions league looks bright, with the competition continuing to grow
