The Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has today announced the dismissal of head coach Domenico Tedesco. The decision comes amid a turbulent period for the national team, marked by poor results and a high-profile dispute with star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Tedesco, appointed in February 2023, had signed a contract extension until 2026 earlier this year. However, his tenure has been plagued by inconsistencies, with Belgium failing to impress in recent matches. The team’s disappointing Round of 16 exit at Euro 2024 further fueled speculation about Tedesco’s future.

The situation escalated in August when Courtois publicly declared he would not play for the national team while Tedesco remained in charge. The goalkeeper cited a lack of communication and differing views on the team’s direction as reasons for his decision.

The RBFA has acknowledged the challenges faced by the team and the need for a fresh start. A statement released by the association read, “Following a thorough evaluation, the RBFA Sports Committee has decided to terminate the contract with national coach Domenico Tedesco. This decision was approved by the Board of Directors. The search for a new head coach is now underway.”

Tedesco’s departure leaves Belgium facing a crucial period as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The search for a new manager is expected to begin immediately, with the RBFA aiming to appoint a successor who can restore stability and guide the team back to its former glory.
