FIFA has appointed one of its top officers, Gelson Fernandes, to ensure that the $60,000 meant for each member of the Super Falcons squad and other African teams at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is duly disbursed to the players.
The appointment was made following concerns that the players may not receive the full amount of money promised to them. In April, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced that each player would receive $100,000 for participating in the tournament. However, there have been reports that the players may only receive $40,000.
Fernandes, who is a former Swiss international footballer, is currently the FIFA Director of Football Development. He is tasked with ensuring that all players participating in FIFA competitions receive the money they are owed.
In a statement, FIFA said that Fernandes would be working closely with the NFF and other stakeholders to ensure that the payments are made in a timely and transparent manner.
The Super Falcons reached the first round but lost to England via penalty.
