League Two side Forest Green Rovers have appointed former Premier League striker Troy Deeney as their new head coach. Deeney signed a contract on Thursday, December 21st, taking over the reins from David Horseman who was dismissed earlier this week.
This marks Deeney’s first managerial role after a highly successful playing career. The 35-year-old spent the majority of his time at Watford, captaining them to two Premier League promotions and leading them to the 2019 FA Cup final. He joined Forest Green Rovers as a player-coach in August 2023 and played a part in their recent run of seven matches with only one win.
The Rovers currently sit 23rd in the League Two table, just outside the relegation zone. Deeney’s immediate focus will be to turn their fortunes around and secure their place in the league.
“I am delighted to have been appointed head coach of Forest Green Rovers,” Deeney said in a statement. “This is a fantastic opportunity and I’m excited to get started. I know the club has a rich history and passionate fans, and I’m determined to help us achieve success on the pitch.”
Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince welcomed Deeney and expressed his confidence in his abilities. “Troy is a proven leader and winner, both on and off the pitch,” Vince said. “We believe he has the qualities and experience to take Forest Green Rovers to the next level.”
Deeney’s first match as head coach will be against Gillingham on Friday, December 22nd. He will be tasked with motivating the team and implementing his tactics in a short span of time to guide the Rovers towards a positive result.
