Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has cast doubt on his former club’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season.
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville said that United’s performance in their 2-0 lost against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was “not good enough” and that they need to improve if they want to challenge for the top prize.
“We played like Tottenham against Spurs,” Neville said. “You can’t win the title playing like that. We were sloppy in possession, we didn’t create enough chances.”
Neville also questioned United’s ability to defend, saying that they were “vulnerable” at the back.
“We need to improve defensively if we want to win the title,” he said. “We’re too open at the back and we’re giving teams too many chances.”
Neville’s comments come after United slow start to the new season.
Neville also had some words for Arsenal, saying that they need more luck if they want to continue their winning run.
“They are not playing well but they are winning,” Neville said. I think luck has been on their side in the last two games but let’s see if the luck can still favor them in their next two games, because I don’t see Arsenal winning against United.
Neville’s comments will be a blow to United fans, who are hoping that their team can challenge for the title this season. However, the former defender’s assessment of the situation is fair, and United will need to improve if they want to be successful.
