USMNT star Gio Reyna’s family has come under fire following the release of an independent report commissioned by U.S. Soccer, which looked into the family’s actions in relation to their son’s career.

The report, compiled by Alston & Bird, examined the family’s past behavior and their involvement in U.S. Soccer affairs.

The report revealed that the Reyna family criticized the treatment and coaching of their son, while Gio’s father, Claudio Reyna, made sexist comments about a female official in charge of one of his son’s games. The investigation also probed a decades-old domestic violence incident involving Gregg Berhalter, which the Reyna family disclosed to then-sporting director Earnie Stewart.

However, Dan Segal, the agent for the Reyna family, criticized the report, claiming that it presented a one-dimensional view of his clients. Segal insisted that his clients had been unfairly portrayed, and that the report failed to present the full picture of their contributions to U.S. soccer.

“U.S. Soccer is a small community,” Segal said in a statement to The Athletic. “Anyone who knows the Reynas knows that they are kind, generous people who have devoted countless hours and energy to promoting U.S. soccer and to the welfare of so many fellow players, parents, coaches, administrators, and others.”

Segal went on to acknowledge that the Reyna family had made mistakes in the past, but argued that this was not the full story. “It is disheartening and grossly unfair to see the family turned into one-dimensional caricatures to progress a narrative that benefits others,” he added.

The release of the report has raised questions about the role of families in the careers of young athletes, particularly in a high-pressure environment like professional soccer. While parents undoubtedly play a crucial role in supporting their children’s dreams and ambitions, some critics argue that there is a fine line between being supportive and overly involved.

For now, it remains to be seen how this controversy will affect Gio Reyna’s career and the reputation of his family in the U.S. soccer community. However, it is clear that this issue has brought to light some of the challenges and complexities that can arise when families become closely involved in the careers of professional athletes.
