Gombe United FC were unable to secure any points as they lost 1-0 to Akwa United FC in a thrilling encounter at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, in the 2023 Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 8 fixture played on Thursday, February 17.

The hosts scored early in the match, with Uche Collins heading in James Ajako’s delivery from inside the box in the 9th minute to give Akwa United the lead. Despite having many chances, Gombe United was unable to equalize.

Umar Ahmed took a solo from the right in the 17th minute and whipped a left-footed shot that hit the post.

The Savannah Scorpions controlled the game from the 55th minute when Sani Suleiman, Sadiq Shuaibu, and Christian Molokwu were introduced, but they were unable to convert their opportunities. Usman Abbas missed a glorious chance in the 69th minute as his header from inside the box went over the post, and Sani Suleiman also failed to convert another goal opportunity.

Goalkeeper George Abine was outstanding for Akwa United, making some crucial saves during the match, including a parry of Moses Effiog’s goal-bound effort in the 47th minute.

Speaking to the press after the game, Gombe United’s Technical Adviser Aliyu Zubairu said that the early goal destabilized their plan, but they were able to find their rhythm in the second half. He stated that the team would work on their deficiencies before the start of the second round of the league.

Gombe United will play their final first-round fixture against Plateau United at home in the Pantami stadium. Despite the loss, the team remains optimistic about their prospects and hopes to improve their performance in their next match.
