In a closely contested match at Craven Cottage, Tottenham Hotspur secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham, thanks to a superbly-taken winner by Harry Kane.
The goal, which came in stoppage time of the first half, was Kane’s 176th for the club and drew him level with Jimmy Greaves at the top of Tottenham’s all-time scoring charts.
The win also meant that Spurs have lost just one of their last 15 Monday-night fixtures and extended Fulham’s wait for a win over the Lilywhites to nine years.
The match got off to a delayed start due to transport and technical issues, but Eric Dier almost immediately livened things up with a bizarre 45-yard effort that landed on the roof of the net.
However, in the opening half hour, Fulham dominated the game and pinned the visitors into their own half, testing Hugo Lloris with a close-range volley from Harrison Reed. But as halftime approached, the pendulum swung back in Tottenham’s favor.
Kane fired a warning shot with a fizzing effort from 30 yards, but it was his stoppage-time goal that proved to be the decisive moment of the match.
Kane’s goal was a trademark finish and means that he is now the joint top-scorer for both his club and country, with both records achieved before he turns 30.
The England captain almost added another goal in the second half, but his point-blank header was palmed away by Bernd Leno. Despite the loss, Fulham remains in seventh place in the table, just nine points shy of the crucial 40-point mark.
On the other hand, Tottenham, who had been on a run of two successive defeats, edge closer to fourth place with Kane scoring eight goals in seven games against Fulham.
