The move comes as part of Chelsea’s strategy to offload a number of players to streamline their squad. The newly appointed Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is reportedly not opposed to Kovacic’s departure.

With just one year remaining on his contract, Kovacic has yet to engage in any substantial discussions regarding an extension with Chelsea. While an agreement on the transfer fee has not been reached, sources reveal that Kovacic has been granted permission to enter into contract negotiations with Manchester City. It is believed that Chelsea would be willing to part ways with the Croatian midfielder for a fee in the region of £35 million.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is keen on bolstering his midfield options ahead of the upcoming season. The future of Ilkay Gundogan, whose contract expires at the end of June, remains uncertain. Barcelona and Arsenal are reportedly among the clubs interested in securing Gundogan’s services should he choose to depart. In such a scenario, Kovacic’s extensive experience with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan would make him a valuable replacement for City.

Kovacic initially joined Chelsea on loan from Real Madrid in 2018 before the move was made permanent a year later for a fee of £40 million. Since then, he has amassed an impressive 221 appearances for the club. During his time with Chelsea, Kovacic has won several prestigious titles, including the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.

The potential acquisition of Mateo Kovacic by Manchester City would not only strengthen the team’s midfield, but it would also provide Guardiola with a player well-versed in high-level competitions. As negotiations continue, football fans eagerly await the final outcome of this transfer saga, which could significantly impact the dynamics of both Manchester City and Chelsea in the upcoming season.
