With this win, the Red Devils extended their undefeated streak on home soil to an impressive 27 matches, having won 23 and drawn 4.

After experiencing back-to-back league defeats, United manager Erik ten Hag had the luxury of an empty week to prepare his team for the clash against Wolves. This extra time for preparation was evident from the start, as United made a bright and dominant opening, controlling possession in the visitors’ half. Despite their impressive build-up play, clear-cut chances were scarce in the early stages. Wolverhampton’s goalkeeper, Daniel Bentley, who was making his first Premier League appearance, made an excellent save from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick to deny United an early breakthrough.

United continued to push for a goal as the first half progressed, and their persistence paid off in the 32nd minute. Antony, who had missed a golden opportunity just moments earlier, unselfishly passed the ball to Anthony Martial, who tapped it home from close range. The goal boosted the confidence of the Red Devils, and they pressed for a second before halftime. However, Bentley denied Raphaël Varane’s attempt, ensuring that Wolves remained just one goal behind as they headed into the interval.

In the second half, United emerged with a desire to build on their lead, but the absence of Marcus Rashford, who had scored 29 goals in the league, was noticeable. The team lacked a cutting edge in the final third, and this continued throughout the last 20 minutes of the match. Jadon Sancho’s low effort was superbly saved by Bentley, setting up a tense ending to the game for United, who were aiming to secure their spot in the Champions League.

Wolves, who had only recorded one victory at Old Trafford since 1980, seemed unlikely to mount a late comeback. United remained in control, and in the dying moments of stoppage time, substitute Alejandro Garnacho scored to seal the hard-fought victory for the home side. The win propelled United four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool in the race for a Champions League spot. On the other hand, Wolves, managed by Julen Lopetegui, maintained their position in 13th place, with their Premier League status secure for another season.

Manchester United’s unbeaten record at home is a testament to their strength and resilience. Their ability to consistently perform well in front of their home fans has played a crucial role in their success this season. The victory over Wolves not only secures their place in the top-four but also provides a boost of confidence as they continue their pursuit of success in domestic and European competitions.

While the absence of Marcus Rashford was noticeable, United’s depth in the squad was showcased as other players stepped up and contributed to the team’s performance. The result against Wolves demonstrates their determination and ability to grind out wins, even when faced with challenges.

For Wolverhampton Wanderers, despite the defeat, they can take solace in the fact that their Premier League status for the upcoming season is secure. Julen Lopetegui’s side can now focus on building and improving for the next campaign, aiming for a higher finish in the league standings.

As the Premier League season approaches its climax, Manchester United’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers has provided them with a significant advantage in their quest for a Champions League spot. Their unbeaten home record serves as a source of strength and confidence, and they will be hoping to carry this momentum forward as they face the challenges that lie ahead.
