Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Andre Onana from Inter Milan on a five-year deal, with the option of a further year.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper has been one of the most highly rated goalkeepers in Europe in recent years, and he will be seen as a major coup for United.
Onana, 26, has kept 104 clean sheets in 255 club appearances. He won three league titles and two KNVB Cups with Ajax before joining Inter in 2022.
He was banned for 12 months by UEFA in 2021 for failing a doping test, but he has since served his suspension and is now free to play.
Onana is expected to challenge David de Gea for the number one spot at Old Trafford. De Gea has been United’s first-choice goalkeeper for many years, but he has been inconsistent in recent seasons.
Onana’s arrival is a sign of United’s ambition under new manager Erik ten Hag. Ten Hag worked with Onana at Ajax, and he is confident that the goalkeeper can be a key player for United in the years to come.
Onana said: “I am very happy to be joining Manchester United. It is a great club with a great history, and I am excited to be a part of it. I know that I have a lot of work to do, but I am confident that I can help the team achieve its goals.”
United’s director of football, John Murtough, said: “We are delighted to welcome Andre to Manchester United. He is a talented goalkeeper with a strong work ethic and a winning mentality. We believe that he will be a valuable addition to our squad.”
Onana is United’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord. The club are also expected to sign Christian Eriksen and Frenkie de Jong in the coming weeks.
