Manchester United claimed a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, thanks to a late header from Raphaël Varane.
The hosts rode their luck for much of the match, with Wolves creating the better chances. However, they were ultimately made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal, as Varane headed home in the 75th minute to seal the win.
The result was a welcome one for new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, who made it two wins from two in his opening Premier League matches. It was also a disappointing one for Wolves, who were denied a dream start to life under new boss Gary O’Neil.
Wolves were the better side for much of the match, and they created a number of good chances. Cunha was particularly impressive, and he was unlucky not to score on a number of occasions. However, the visitors were ultimately undone by their poor finishing, and they will be left to rue their missed opportunities.
Manchester United were not at their best, but they were clinical when it mattered. Varane’s goal was their only shot on target of the match, but it was enough to secure the win. The result was a good start for Ten Hag, and it will give him some confidence ahead of their next match against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Wolves will be disappointed with the result, but they can take heart from their performance. They created plenty of chances, and they were unlucky not to score more goals. O’Neil will be hoping that his side can find their shooting boots in their next match, as they will need to be more clinical if they want to challenge for a top-four finish this season.
