Morocco pulled off a remarkable upset to defeat Korea Republic 1-0 in Adelaide on Tuesday. The world No. 72 scored early and held off a team ranked 55 places above them to secure their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup victory.
Ibtissam Jraidi scored the only goal of the game in the sixth minute. Salma Amani’s cross was met with a fine diving header from Jraidi, who directed her effort beyond Korea goalkeeper Kim Jungmi.
Morocco had a number of chances to extend their lead in the first half, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Korea Republic came out stronger after the break, but they were unable to create any clear-cut chances.
The Taegeuk Ladies had the best opportunity of the half when Casey Phair’s shot fizzed just wide in the 75th minute. However, Morocco held on to secure a famous victory.
The result leaves Korea Republic in danger of elimination from the tournament. If Germany avoid defeat against Colombia tonight, Korea will be out of Australia & New Zealand 2023.
Morocco’s victory is a major upset and a sign that they are a team to be reckoned with. They will be looking to build on this result and make further progress in the tournament.
