Napoli clinched their first Serie A title in 33 years after a 1-1 draw away at Udinese on Thursday.
The draw was enough to confirm their status as champions of Italy, with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scoring the crucial equalizer that secured the title for the Partenopei.
Osimhen, who joined Napoli from French side Lille in 2020, has been a key figure for the club this season. The 24-year-old striker has scored 22 goals in 33 league appearances for the Naples club, and 27 in all competition.
The Nigerian’s equalizer against Udinese proved to be the defining moment of the match, as it secured the title for Napoli and sparked wild celebrations among the club’s fans.
However, there had been speculation in recent weeks that Osimhen could be on his way out of Napoli this summer. The Nigerian striker had been linked with a move to Manchester United, with reports suggesting that the Premier League club was willing to pay a substantial fee to sign him.
But Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has now confirmed that Osimhen will not be leaving the club this summer. Speaking to Rai Sport, De Laurentiis said: “I will not sell Victor Osimhen this summer — no way. I’ve already activated and triggered the option to extend Luciano Spalletti’s contract for next season.”
De Laurentiis is known for being a tough negotiator, and his comments suggest that Manchester United would have to pay a hefty fee if they were to sign Osimhen.
Despite this, Manchester United is still expected to pursue the Nigerian striker this summer. Osimhen’s impressive performances this season have caught the attention of many top clubs across Europe, and it remains to be seen whether Napoli will be able to hold onto him for much longer.
For now, however, Napoli fans can enjoy their first Serie A title in over three decades, with Osimhen’s crucial goal helping to secure their place in Italian football history.
