A fire broke out at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland on Saturday, forcing the evacuation of the New Zealand Women’s World Cup squad.
The fire was reported at around 7:45 p.m. local time, and all players and staff were safely evacuated. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it is not thought to be suspicious.
A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand said that there had been “multiple blazes” at the hotel, but that they had all been extinguished. Four people were treated for smoke inhalation, but there were no serious injuries.
The New Zealand Football Federation said that the team was “safe and accounted for” and that they were “grateful to the emergency services for their swift response.”
The fire comes just days after the Football Ferns opened their FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Norway. The team will next face Australia on Tuesday.
Update
The Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson has since said that the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
