Star forward Neymar Jr. will miss the 2024 Copa América in the United States due to a knee injury, confirmed Brazil national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar on Rádio 9 8 today.
“It’s too early for his return,” Lasmar stated. “There’s no point in rushing the recovery process and taking unnecessary risks. Our expectation is that he will be fully prepared to return to competition at the start of the 2024 European calendar, which begins in August.”
Neymar suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his left knee during Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October. He underwent successful surgery in November, but the lengthy recovery timeline will keep him sidelined for the prestigious South American tournament.
His absence is a significant blow to Brazil’s Copa América hopes. Neymar is the team’s captain and talisman, having led them to victory in the 2019 edition. While talented replacements exist, his experience and leadership on the pitch will be greatly missed.
This news adds to a challenging period for Brazil, who have recently struggled in World Cup qualifying and are currently outside the automatic qualification spots for the 2026 tournament.
While Neymar’s focus will shift towards rehabilitation and a successful return in August, his absence at the Copa América will surely be felt by both the team and the fans.
