Nigeria Stuns Australia 3-2 at FIFA Women's World Cup™ 2

Australia took the lead in the first minute of added time during the opening half, with Emily van Egmond scoring the milestone 50th goal of the Women’s World Cup. Her precise shot, guided by Caitlin Foord’s low cross, found the net, putting Australia ahead.

However, the Nigerian team showcased their resilience, equalizing in the sixth minute of added time before the half-time whistle. Rasheedat Ajibade’s shot deflected to Uchenna Kanu, who skillfully placed the ball through Steph Catley’s legs and beyond Mackenzie Arnold, leveling the score.

The introduction of Asisat Oshoala on the 63rd minute proved to be a game-changer for Nigeria. Just two minutes later, on the 65th minute, Osinachi Ohale, who bravely played on despite an injury, headed in at the far post after Ajibade’s header was pushed away by Arnold. This goal propelled Nigeria ahead.

Oshoala continued to unsettle the Australian defense, and on the 72nd minute, she capitalized on a mix-up between Alanna Kennedy and Arnold, scoring Nigeria’s third goal from a tight angle.

Although Kennedy managed to pull one back for Australia in deep added time, it wasn’t enough to avoid defeat. The result leaves Australia with the task of needing a victory in their final group game against Canada to secure a spot in the last 16 of the tournament.
