A sixty-sixth minute goal from 16-year old Matthew Samuel was not enough to salvage a point for Sunshine Stars in their Week 22 tie of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) against Remo Stars.
Samuel came off the bench to reduce the deficit for Sunshine Stars from Waheed Adebayo’s pass at Remo Stars Stadium Ikenne, Ogun State.
The youngster who made his debut against Bayelsa United had earlier promised to give his best whenever he was called upon.
Runaway NPFL leaders Remo Stars scored in the 8th minute through Alex Oyowah who nodded home from Sikiru Alimi’s long thrust.
The hosts responded swiftly only to see their efforts thwarted by Remo Stars’ defense.
Against the run-of-play the Sky Blue side made it two through Ibrahim Abubakar who lobbed the ball past helpless Ishola Abdulateef in the 27th minute.
Sunshine Stars Technical Adviser, Abubakar Bala threw in Samuel Matthew, Vincent Okeke and Jibola Matthew to replace Esobe Chukwudi, Uche Onwuasonaya and Dabani Alao, in the second half.
However, efforts by the Owena Whales to level up were not successful despite Samuel’s strike.
Sunshine Stars will next visit Umuahia to square up against Abia Warriors.
