The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has proposed two league formats for the 2023-24 season, according to a statement released by the league on Tuesday.

NPFL Proposes Two League Formats for 2023-24 Season 2

The first format is a 20-team league, with each team playing each other twice, once home and once away. The season would start on August 26, 2023, and end on June 9, 2024.

The second format is an abridged league, with the 20 teams divided into two groups of 10. Each team would play the other teams in their group twice, once home and once away. The top three teams from each group would then progress to a Super Six tournament, with the winner of the tournament being crowned the champion. The season would start on August 26, 2023, and end on April 14, 2024.

The NPFL has invited feedback from clubs on the two proposed formats. The league will then make a final decision on the format for the 2023-24 season in the coming weeks.

Which format do you prefer?

The two proposed formats have their own pros and cons. The 20-team format would allow for more games and more competition, but it would also be longer and more expensive. The abridged format would be shorter and cheaper, but it would also mean that some teams would play fewer games.

Ultimately, the decision of which format to choose will depend on a number of factors, including the preferences of the clubs, the financial constraints of the league, and the desire to create a competitive and exciting league.

I would prefer the 20-team format, as I believe that it would provide more opportunities for teams to play each other and for fans to see their favorite teams play more often. However, I understand that the abridged format may be more appealing to some clubs and to the league’s financial backers.

I am interested to hear your thoughts on the two proposed formats. Which format do you prefer? Let me know in the comments below.
