Onome Ebi, the captain of Nigeria’s women’s national football team, is set to make a historic return to the Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) as a free agent, joining Abia Angels.
The news was confirmed by Oluwaseun Oyediji, a women’s football journalist who stated that negotiations are close to being finalised between the player and the club.
Abia Angels, who are currently in the top six in the NWFL Premiership, will undoubtedly benefit from the veteran defender’s experience and leadership qualities. Ebi is regarded as one of the most successful female footballers in Nigeria, having played for several top-flight teams in Europe and Asia.
Ebi’s switch to Abia Angels was reportedly influenced by the team’s coach and Super Falcons assistant coach, Ann Chiejine. The two have worked together in the national team, and it appears that Chiejine’s influence has been instrumental in Ebi’s decision to join Abia Angels.
The 39-year old defender began her professional career with Bayelsa Queens in 2003 before moving to Sweden in 2008. Since then, she has played for several top-flight clubs in Turkey, Belarus, China, and Spain. Ebi has also been an integral part of the Super Falcons team, helping the team win the African Women’s Cup of Nations three times.
Ebi’s move to Abia Angels will undoubtedly be a boost for the club, as they aim to challenge for the NWFL Premiership title this season. With her experience and leadership qualities, Ebi is sure to make an impact on and off the pitch, helping the team develop and grow in the coming months.
