Panathinaikos stunned Marseille on penalties to reach the Champions League play-offs on Tuesday, August 15. The Greek side came back from a 2-1 aggregate deficit to win the tie 5-3 on penalties after the match was drawn 2-2 after extra time.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice for Marseille to give them a 2-1 lead on aggregate, but Panathinaikos equalized in the 89th minute through Dimitris Pelkas and then forced extra time with a penalty in the 99th minute after Matteo Guendouzi was adjudged to have handballed in the box.
Neither side could find a winner in extra time, and the match went to penalties. Panathinaikos scored all five of their penalties, while Marseille missed two, including one from Guendouzi.
The result is a major blow for Marseille, who were hoping to reach the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2018. They will now have to focus on the Europa League, where they will face Qarabağ in the play-offs.
Panathinaikos, meanwhile, will face Braga in the play-offs for a place in the Champions League group stage. It will be the Greek side’s first appearance in the group stage since 2010.
