South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns have successfully arrived in Nigeria, completing an arduous journey ahead of their crucial CAF Champions League second preliminary round, first-leg encounter against Remo Stars this Sunday.

The Masandawana, who are aiming for a return to the competition's lucrative group stages, touched down on Friday, with the team now focused on preparations for the highly anticipated match at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.

The clash pits the reigning South African champions against the Nigerian champions, Remo Stars, in a major continental test for both sides.

Leading the charge for the Brazilians is the team's fan-favourite coach, Miguel Cardoso. The Portuguese tactician, known for his philosophical and attacking style of play, will be relying on his squad's depth and experience to secure a positive result on the road.

Cardoso has been vocal about the logistical challenges of African club football, particularly the two-day travel required to reach the match venue in Ogun State, and will be looking for his players to overcome any fatigue.

"The trip is obviously difficult, but this is Champions League football," a focused Cardoso noted recently, highlighting the team's resolve to compete at the highest level despite the hurdles.

Sundowns enter this round following a bye, while Remo Stars advanced by defeating US Zilimadjou 5-0 on aggregate. The Nigerian side is eager to make a statement by upsetting the former African champions and reaching the group stage for the first time in their history.

The fixture is scheduled for a 4:00 PM kick-off on Sunday, with the winner over two legs advancing to the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2025/2026 season.

All eyes will be on Abeokuta as the continental battle between West and South African football giants resumes.
