Sporting Lagos FC, a newly promoted club to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), made a winning start to their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over visiting Gombe United on Monday.
The match, played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, formerly Onikan Stadium, attracted a large crowd of fans who were eager to see their team play in the top flight for the first time in several years.
Sporting Lagos FC showed promise from the start and took the lead in the 42nd minute through a header from Rivio Ayemwenre, who was left unmarked to receive a cross from Jonathan Alukwu.
Gombe United tried to fight back in the second half, but Sporting Lagos FC doubled their lead in the 73rd minute through Clement Nantuam, who benefited from Junior Lokosa’s missed over-head kick to score from a goal mouth scramble.
The win was a perfect start to the season for Sporting Lagos FC and will give them confidence as they look to establish themselves as a force in the NPFL.
