Despite the impressive performance of the Super Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not fulfilled its obligation to pay the team’s outstanding wages.
The global representative body for professional footballers, FIFPRO, has stepped in to address the issue and assist the Super Falcons in obtaining their overdue payments from the NFF.
The NFF owes both players and coaches a significant backlog of match bonuses, camp allowances, and expenses dating back to 2021.
FIFPRO’s intervention seeks to prompt the NFF to make the necessary payments to the Super Falcons. Regrettably, the current coach, Randy Waldrum, has gone unpaid for several months, and the players have also been deprived of their bonuses during this time.
Concerns have arisen that the players might not even receive the money that FIFA allocated to them for their participation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
This potential shortfall is due to FIFA’s policy of disbursing funds through the respective national football federations, which raises uncertainty about whether the allocated money will reach the players.
The impactful statement has sparked significant responses from notable Nigerian athletes, including the team’s star player Asisat Oshoala, who shared the post on her social media platform.
Additional football players, both current and former, have rallied in support of the Super Falcons, including Victor Osimhen and Odion Ighalo.
