Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has questioned whether Aaron Ramsdale has the ability to win the Premier League title for the Gunners.
Van Persie, who strikes for Arsenal in his playing days, made the comments after watching Ramsdale make a number of errors in recent games.
“You can’t win the title with a goalkeeper who makes countless mistakes,” Van Persie said on the Yours, Mine, Away! podcast. I watched the friendly against Man United and I wasn’t impressed, even though I played in both clubs as a player.
“Ramsdale has been making a lot of mistakes leading to goals. Against Southampton he was floppy, I think a competition is needed if Arsenal wants to compete next season.”
Ramsdale’s form has been a cause for concern for Arsenal fans in recent months. The 24-year-old has made a number of high-profile errors, including a costly mistake in the Premier league against Southampton.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended Ramsdale, but he will be aware that the goalkeeper’s form needs to improve if the Gunners are to challenge for the title next season.
Van Persie’s comments will only add to the pressure on Ramsdale. The Dutchman is a hugely respected figure in the game, and his words will carry weight with Arsenal fans.
Only time will tell whether Ramsdale can prove Van Persie wrong and win the title with Arsenal. However, the goalkeeper will need to improve his form significantly if he is to do so.
What do you think? Can Ramsdale win the title for Arsenal?
