Bayer Leverkusen maintained their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Hoffenheim on Saturday.
The Werkself were almost untouchable in the first half and went 2-0 up thanks to two lovely goals from Florian Wirtz and Alejandro Grimaldo.
Wirtz opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a stunning free-kick from 25 yards out. Grimaldo doubled Leverkusen’s lead just 10 minutes later with a curling effort from the edge of the box.
Hoffenheim burst into life after the restart and found themselves level through Robert Stach and Wout Weghorst in the 55th and 58th minutes respectively.
However, Alonso’s side had the final say when Grimaldo curled in his second to keep the Werkself unbeaten this season and five points clear of Bayern Munich ahead of Der Klassiker this evening.

Bayer Leverkusen were outstanding in the first half and looked on course for a comfortable victory. However, Hoffenheim showed great character to come back from two goals down and level the match.
In the end, Leverkusen’s quality shone through and they deservedly took all three points. Grimaldo was the star of the show with two excellent goals, while Wirtz also impressed with his all-round performance.
