Vlatko Andonovski has resigned as the head coach of the United States women’s national team, less than two weeks after the team’s early exit from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Andonovski, who was appointed to the role in 2019, led the USWNT to a record 51 wins, 5 losses, and 9 draws during his tenure. However, the team’s performance at the World Cup was widely criticized, as they were knocked out in the round of 16 by Sweden.
In a statement, Andonovski said that he was “proud of what we accomplished together” and that he “wishes the team all the best in the future.”
The US Soccer Federation is expected to begin the search for Andonovski’s successor immediately. Desiree Ellis, the former head coach of South Africa’s national team, is reportedly one of the leading candidates for the job.
Ellis is a highly respected coach who has a proven track record of success. She led South Africa to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they finished in the quarterfinals. She is also the first black woman to coach a national team at the World Cup.
Other potential candidates for the USWNT head coach position include Jill Ellis, who led the team to back-to-back World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019, and Paul Riley, who is currently the head coach of the Portland Thorns.
The USWNT is in need of a new coach who can help them get back to their winning ways. Desiree Ellis is a strong candidate who has the experience and the skills to lead the team to success.
