Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has heaped praise on Gabriel Martinelli, saying the Brazilian is faster than Bukayo Saka in a sprint.
Rice, who joined Arsenal from West Ham United this summer, spoke to TNT Sports‘ Rio Ferdinand in an exclusive interview and said Martinelli has been one of the most impressive players in training.
“When we were away in America [in pre-season], I’ve never seen someone so sharp in training as Martinelli,” Rice said. “He’s so sharp. Martinelli is faster than Saka [in a sprint]. 100%. Those two on the wings is frightening.”
Martinelli, 21, has been a revelation since joining Arsenal from Ituano in 2019. The Brazilian has scored 16 goals in 67 appearances for the Gunners, and he is considered to be one of the brightest young talents in the Premier League.
Saka, 20, is another highly rated youngster at Arsenal. The England international has scored 23 goals in 103 appearances for the Gunners, and he is capable of playing on either wing.
Rice believes that Martinelli and Saka can form a deadly partnership on the wings for Arsenal this season. “They’re both so quick and they’re both so direct,” he said. “They’re both good finishers as well. I think they can be a really good partnership.”
Arsenal are hoping to challenge for the Premier League title this season after finishing eighth last term. The Gunners have made a strong start to the campaign, winning their opening two games.
Rice will be hoping to help Arsenal achieve their goals this season. The 24-year-old is a proven performer in the Premier League, and he is expected to be a key player for the Gunners in the years to come.
