Fulham reach League Cup semi-final after penalty shootout win over Everton 2

Fulham reached their first-ever League Cup semi-final on Tuesday night after defeating Everton 7-6 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

The tie was goalless until the 41st minute when Michael Keane’s own goal put Fulham ahead. However, Everton equalised through Beto in the 82nd minute to send the game to penalties.

  • Everton have now been knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage for the fourth time in the last six years.

Marek Rodák was the hero for Fulham, saving the decisive penalty from Tom Davies after Andre Ayew had missed for the Cottagers.

Fulham will now face Manchester United in the semi-final, while Everton’s wait for a major trophy goes on.

Reaction

Fulham manager Marco Silva was delighted with his team’s victory.

“I’m very happy for the players,” he said. “They showed great character to come back from a goal down and then win on penalties. We’re in the semi-final now and we’re looking forward to it.”

Everton manager Sean Dyche was disappointed with his team’s defeat.

“We’re gutted to lose on penalties,” he said. “We thought we had done enough to win the game in normal time, but it wasn’t to be. We have to pick ourselves up and focus on the Premier League now.”
