Antoine Griezmann has heaped praise on Lionel Messi, saying the Argentine is “the best in history” and that he wants to end up playing in the MLS with him.
Griezmann and Messi were teammates at Barcelona for two seasons, but the Frenchman left the club in 2021 to join Atletico Madrid. Messi, meanwhile, joined the MLS in 2023, signing with Inter Miami.
Speaking to ESPN via Bolarinwa Olajide, Griezmann said of Messi: “Leo is the best in history. He’s filling stadiums, he’s scoring a lot of goals and he’s winning games. He’s incredible.
“I think it’s the best thing MLS have done to bring in Leo, in terms of marketing and in terms of football. My target is to end up there.”
Griezmann has had a mixed time at Atletico since his return, scoring 11 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions last season. However, he is still considered to be one of the best strikers in the world.
The 31-year-old is under contract with Atletico until 2024, but it is possible that he could leave the club sooner if he gets the opportunity to play with Messi in the MLS.
Messi has been a revelation in the MLS since his arrival, scoring 24 goals in 28 appearances. He has helped Inter Miami to a 7th place finish in the Eastern Conference, and they are still in contention for a playoff spot.
It remains to be seen whether Griezmann will get his wish of playing with Messi in the MLS, but it is certainly an intriguing prospect.
