As the Nigeria National League's regular season draws to a close, attention turns to the Promotion playoffs — the six-club elimination bracket that will determine which two additional sides join the automatic Promotion pair in the NPFL for 2026-27. 1. Hamisu Aliyu — Adamawa United (AM)
Already generating significant buzz after a stunning late-season surge, the 20-year-old from Yola has been the most exciting player in the NNL’s second half of the season. 2. Chike Obi — Abia Comets (CF)
The towering 24-year-old centre-forward is the NNL’s joint top scorer this season with 16 goals. Obi’s movement off the ball, aerial strength, and composure in front of goal make him a nightmare for defenders. Should Comets need him in a playoff scenario, he has already demonstrated he performs when it matters.
3. Musa Ibrahim — Dakkada FC (CM)
A commanding presence in Dakkada’s engine room, Ibrahim’s ability to dictate tempo and break up opposition attacks makes him indispensable to his side’s playoff prospects. His reading of the game belies his 23 years, and he has the physicality to handle the intensity that playoff football brings.
4. Rasheed Lawal — Shooting Stars B (LW)
The 21-year-old wide attacker has been Shooting stars B’s standout performer in the second half of the season. His pace and direct running terrorise full-backs, and he has delivered four assists and three goals in his last eight appearances. A player destined for the NPFL regardless of his club’s fate this May.
5. Ebuka Okonkwo — Sunshine Boys (GK)
Goalkeeping is often the difference in tight playoff ties, and Okonkwo has been magnificent this season. His shot-stopping reflexes are elite at NNL level, and his command of the penalty area has given his defensive teammates enormous confidence. A goalkeeper who should be on NPFL radars this summer.
6. Victor Sunday — Kada City (RB)
An attacking full-back with energy to burn, Sunday has contributed three goals and six assists from right back — remarkable numbers for a defender. His overlapping runs create consistent width problems for opposition defences and his delivery into the box is a consistent weapon for Kada City’s attacking patterns.
The NNL promotion playoffs begin in May. These six players, and many others across the competing clubs, will be the ones to watch as Nigeria’s football pyramid determines its next upward movers.
