The crisis engulfing Heartland FC deepened dramatically on Saturday when the Owerri-based club suffered a 2-1 home defeat to MFM FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium — a result that sent the Naze Millionaires into the relegation zone with five matches remaining in the 2025-26 Nigeria Professional Football League season.
It is a position that seemed unthinkable at the start of the campaign when Heartland, bolstered by pre-season investment and the appointment of a new coaching staff, were expected to challenge for a top-half finish. Instead, a combination of poor results, administrative instability, and a worrying lack of goals has reduced the Imo State club to survival mode.
Saturday’s defeat was particularly galling. Heartland took the lead through captain Friday Okoye’s header on 22 minutes and appeared to be controlling the match before MFM’s Adewale Hammed changed the game with two clinical finishes in the space of six second-half minutes. The away side’s winner on 78 minutes triggered furious protests from sections of the home crowd, delaying the final minutes of play.
Heartland’s coach Emmanuel Ochai — himself only appointed in February — was visibly dejected but urged calm. “We are not down yet. There are fifteen points still to play for, and we only need to pick up points in games we can win. I believe in this squad. The response has to come now.”
The Imo State government, which funds the club, has been largely silent on the unfolding crisis but sources close to the administration indicate a full internal review will take place at the end of the season regardless of the final standings. Player salaries, reportedly delayed for up to two months earlier in the campaign, have since been cleared, but the damage to morale has never been fully repaired.
Heartland currently sit 18th in the 20-team NPFL standings, one point below the safety line. Their remaining fixtures — away at Kano Pillars, home to Plateau United, away at Nasarawa United, home to El-Kanemi Warriors, and a final-day trip to Doma United — offer a survivable but demanding schedule.
Former Heartland and Super Eagles midfielder Okey Emordi, now a football analyst, offered a sobering verdict. “Heartland is an institution in Nigerian football. But institutions can fall if they are not properly managed. The talent is there in that squad. What they need now is organisation, belief, and leadership. The next two home games are must-wins. Simple.”
Nigerian football is watching with concern. The Naze Millionaires have history, heritage, and a fanbase that deserves better. Whether the club can rescue its season will be answered in the coming weeks.
