Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. is at the center of a global backlash today following a series of controversial remarks directed at referee Sávio Pereira Sampaio after Santos’ 2-0 victory over Remo.

While the match ended in a win for Santos, Neymar was visibly frustrated by a late yellow card he received in the 85th minute after protesting a foul. The booking carries a heavy price: Neymar is now suspended for Santos’ crucial upcoming clash against Flamengo on April 6th.
The Controversy
In a post-match interview that has since gone viral for all the wrong reasons, Neymar didn’t just critique the refereeing—he made it personal.
“He’s the kind of referee who wants to be the star of the game. He shows a great lack of respect toward all the players,” Neymar initially stated.
However, his frustration boiled over into a sexist jab that has sparked outrage across social media and sports media outlets:
“I think the referee was on his period [sic], and that’s why he officiated the match like that. You couldn’t even talk to the referee; you were ignored.”
A Pattern of Friction
The outburst follows a match where Neymar felt he was unfairly targeted by Remo players, specifically citing a heavy foul from behind by Diego Hernández. Despite being the victim of the tackle, Neymar’s vocal protest led to his own caution.
The suspension is a massive blow for Santos. With Neymar recently finding top form—including a brilliant assist earlier in the Remo match—his absence against Flamengo could derail the team’s momentum and impacts his bid for a consistent spot in the Brazilian national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Facing Potential Sanctions
The footballing world is now watching to see how the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will respond. Just last month, Série A defender Gustavo Marques was slapped with a 12-match ban for similar sexist comments.
While Neymar has yet to receive a formal ban, advocacy groups and fans alike are calling for accountability, arguing that such remarks have no place in modern sport. As of Friday morning, the hashtag #Respeito has begun trending in Brazil, with many pointing out the irony of Neymar calling for “respect” from officials while delivering such a derogatory assessment himself.
Santos FC has not yet issued an official statement regarding the player’s comments.
