Players at Enyimba International Football Club, one of Nigeria’s most decorated clubs, have gone on strike following what they describe as unfulfilled promises by Abia State government officials regarding unpaid allowances and bonuses.
According to reports, the players have been protesting since Monday, refusing to train after the State Commissioner and the Deputy Governor failed to deliver on commitments made to the squad over outstanding financial obligations. The players are said to be owed significant sums in both match bonuses and general allowances that have gone unpaid for a substantial period.
Enyimba, who have historically been among the most successful clubs in African football — having won the CAF Champions League twice — have often been at the centre of welfare concerns surrounding player payments in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The strike is a significant development ahead of crucial league fixtures and threatens to disrupt the club’s NPFL campaign if a resolution is not reached swiftly.
